About the concert
There is a particular moment on a summer day when the heat becomes almost sweet. When there is nowhere you want to hurry, when time slows down, your body longs for shade, and your thoughts long for silence. Seventeenth-century Italy knew this feeling well and even had a word for it: languore—a state of languid longing. Not weakness, but a distinct way of being: somewhere between sleep and wakefulness, between a sigh and a smile.
Baroque music was born in this very space. The sweet pain of love in Monteverdi, gentle temptation in the arias of Cavalli and Sánchez, the melancholy of a passacaglia stretching like the shadow of an old wall—and then, suddenly, the joyful energy of a chaconne bursting in like a breath of wind. LC:EME brings together music that understands one simple truth: the strongest emotions are never unambiguous.
An August evening. The Metropolitan's House. Baroque violin, cello, recorders, theorbo, harpsichord—and voices singing of things that have not changed in four hundred years.
