About the concert
All the music of this evening is bound to the human breath. Italian melody is born of the voice, and even when performed by a cello, flute, or piano, it behaves like singing: taking a breath, holding a long note, and softly descending at the end of a phrase. Here, instruments adopt the expressive manner of the human voice.
Over the course of a single evening, this melodic tradition travels through several homes. It originates where music served prayer and sorrow, moves into the theater to become drama and character, step out into salons and streets beneath open windows along the Ligurian coast, and ultimately finds its place in cinema—all while preserving its unmistakable nature.
Italians have never shied away from expressing emotion. Here, grief is voiced fully, joy requires no justification, and tenderness never hides behind irony. In this directness lies the main appeal of the evening: the music speaks directly from the heart, and speaks beautifully.
Voices and instruments alternate as the program gradually brightens—moving from the restraint and quiet of its opening pages to melodies recognized from the very first bars. By the end, Italy becomes what it represents in the popular imagination: sun, sea, and an evening when everyone sings together.
