About the concert
Three Romantic works for clarinet and piano duo—conceived as a musical dialogue and an intimate chamber conversation within the cozy salon setting of the White Drawing Room. Behind each of these compositions lies a compelling biographical story essential for understanding its context.
Saint-Saëns composed his sonata in 1921 at eighty-five years old as part of a grand initiative to write solo sonatas for woodwind instruments to expand their repertoire. He managed to complete three sonatas—for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon.
Schumann wrote his Fantasy Pieces in typical fashion during a two-day surge of inspiration in February 1849, originally titling them "Night Pieces." The three movements flow seamlessly without pauses, steadily gaining momentum: a restrained first movement, a light second, and a fiery, fast-paced third.
In 1890, Brahms announced his retirement from composition. However, after hearing the clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld the following year, he composed four additional works over the next three years specifically for the instrument and the virtuoso who inspired him. The Op. 120 sonatas became his final chamber scores.
