About the concert
Bach and Handel were born just days apart in 1685, never met during their lifetimes, yet today their works frequently appear alongside one another on concert programs. In this performance, their music is brought together through the shared format of the concerti grossi.
In Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, there are no soloists at all. Nine string parts—three violins, three violas, and three cellos—stand as equals, passing musical ideas from one to another so rapidly that it becomes an engaging task for the ear to trace. Between the two fast movements, Bach left only two chords, inviting the performers to improvise. Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins in D minor serves as an essential dialogue of the evening, with the two solo lines chasing and echoing each other just a few bars apart, rarely unison.
In Handel’s Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, an ensemble of two violins and cello is contrasted against the full orchestra. Handel composed the twelve concertos of this opus in just one month during the autumn of 1739 for his London theatrical evenings, where they were performed as interludes between acts. The first movement of Concerto No. 5 evolved directly from the overture to his Ode for St. Cecilia's Day, written that very same month.
