From Ukraine to Venice

In the 1760s, Baldassare Galuppi, Kapellmeister at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, spent several years working outside Italy. When he returned home, he brought a student with him: Dmytro Bortnianskyi. Bortnianskyi spent the next ten years in Venice and other Italian cities. Maksym Berezovskyi found himself in Italy at roughly the same time: he studied in Bologna with Padre Martini, and his opera Demofonte was performed in Livorno.
It is this part of their musical legacy that forms the program: Bortnianskyi’s motets “Salve Regina,” “Ave Maria,” and “In convertendo Dominus,” his harpsichord sonata and Concerto for Harpsichord and Orchestra; Berezovskyi’s Sonata for Violin and Basso Continuo and an aria from Demofonte. The evening concludes with Galuppi’s Te Deum — the teacher’s music alongside that of his student. These works are especially worth hearing live, as some of the scores have returned from archival shelves to concert life only very recently.
Liatoshynsky Capella has turned to the musical legacy of Maksym Berezovskyi and Dmytro Bortnianskyi on numerous occasions. The ensemble’s musicians regularly participate in artistic projects dedicated to researching, restoring, and performing the works of these composers, collaborating with organizations and cultural-program initiatives whose goal is to uncover lesser-known chapters of Ukrainian musical history.
