Listening to his music — always youthful, radiant, and life-affirming — it is hard to believe in the vast distance of time between us and him. Mozart is easily perceived as our contemporary: just think of the opening bars of the Fortieth Symphony or the Rondo alla Turca — these melodies are so naturally woven into popular culture that it feels as if they have always topped streaming charts. Just as it was more than 200 years ago, when on the streets of Vienna and Prague, alongside popular folk songs, people hummed, whistled, and murmured under their breath the latest operatic aria by Wolfgang.
