About the concert

Robert and Clara Schumann are an example of a creative partnership in which music and private life were inseparable: a shared household, shared manuscripts, and dedications to one another. Yet as composers, they were very different — and it is precisely this contrast that shapes the program, named after two gemstones.

Pearl is Clara’s color. Even, pure light that changes subtly depending on how it is illuminated. Her contemporaries were not wrong to describe her playing as “pearly,” praising the crystalline clarity of her sound. Her music in this program confirms that impression: the Notturno, the slow Andante from the G-minor Trio, and the Three Romances, where the melody unfolds calmly and without abrupt gestures.

Opal is Robert’s color. Almost nocturnal darkness through which golden and crimson sparks suddenly break. Adagio & Allegro, the Fantasiestücke, and the pieces in folk style abound in such contrasts: from concentrated stillness to a sudden flash within just a few bars.

Both gemstones share a common quality — each conceals countless shades within, revealed only under a particular light. The chamber ensemble does something similar with this music: cello, clarinet, tenor, and piano take turns illuminating it from different angles. And you will become witnesses to these shifting colors.
