About the concert
Stylistic imitation in music is a particular way of thinking, governed by its own rules. A composer draws on a form with several centuries of history and creates something entirely new within it: music that is stylistically contemporary to its time while consciously adhering to an older framework. This program features three such works, composed at different times and in different countries.
Hubert Parry’s Lady Radnor’s Suite was written for an amateur women’s orchestra led by the Countess of Radnor. It is a sequence of Baroque dances — allemande, sarabande, bourrée, minuet, and gigue — expressed in the language of late Romanticism.
Edvard Grieg’s From Holberg’s Time was composed to mark the bicentenary of Danish writer Ludvig Holberg and recreates the dances of his era. Grieg initially wrote the suite for piano and, a year later, arranged it for string orchestra — in this form it became one of his most popular scores. A Prelude, Sarabande, Gavotte, “Air,” and Rigaudon: five short movements in which the dance tradition of the 18th century is filtered through a distinctly Norwegian sound.
Ihor Shamo’s Divertissement in the Old Style continues the same tradition in 20th-century Ukrainian music. Shamo is best known for his songs and piano cycles, while his chamber and large-scale symphonic works remain rare guests in concert programs. This makes the opportunity to hear this “dark side of the Moon” particularly intriguing.
