About the concert
Early autumn is easy to recognize by the quality of the air: still warm, yet already clear, with spiderwebs drifting above the grass and a haze that lifts by midday. It is a time when nothing in nature is in a hurry, conserving its warmth for the ripening fruit.
The program is shaped around this autumnal mood. Baroque music here takes on a melancholic and tranquil character: Bach’s “Air,” the Adagio and Largo from concertos by his sons, Purcell’s “Ground,” Handel’s “Lascia ch’io pianga,” and “Dido’s Lament.” This music is filled with long, flowing lines, like shadows cast by the autumn sun.
Alongside these are brighter, more animated works: a concerto by Vivaldi, Couperin’s Pièces en concert, and two ariettas by Alessandro Scarlatti about violets and an unfaithful lover. This is music capable of dispersing the thick morning mist and adding vivid splashes of color.
