Concert Program: Iryna Aleksiichuk — “Stabat Mater” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart — “Vesperae solennes de confessore,” K. 339 Performers: Liatoshynskyi Capella conducted by Ruben Tolmachov Olesia Liuba /soprano/ Oksana Hordyk /mezzo-soprano/ Denys Sahirov /tenor/ Vasyl Titov /bass/ Mozart composed "Vesperae solennes de confessore" in 1780 for Salzburg Cathedral, commissioned by Archbishop Colloredo, just a year before his final break with the Salzburg court. The six movements of the cycle—five psalms and the Magnificat—were intended for a solemn evening service. Laudate Dominum for soprano and choir became so popular in the 19th century that it was arranged in numerous versions for different ensembles. Iryna Aleksiichuk is a Ukrainian composer, pianist, and organist. Her Stabat Mater is part of a great European tradition. This canonical text, depicting Mary mourning the crucified Jesus, is one of the oldest and most deeply explored in European music—from Pergolesi to Schubert and Verdi. Each new setting becomes a way of reinterpreting archetypal images, bringing them into the present, and ultimately entering into a dialogue with all the composers who have turned to it before.
