The Four Seasons
TicketsConcert Program: Antonio Vivaldi — The Four Seasons, a cycle of four violin concertos Performers: Liatoshynskyi Capella: Orchestra Oleh Dudnychenko — violin Nataliia Fomenko — harpsichord Antonio Vivaldi’s cycle of four concertos, The Four Seasons, is one of the earliest examples of program music in history. Music, abstract by its very nature, was given a vivid and accessible narrative — the portrayal of different seasons within the annual cycle of nature. Vivaldi enhanced the imagery of these works through musical imitation, allowing listeners to recognize the sounds of each season: birdsong, a shepherd’s dog barking, thunderstorms and pouring rain, even the crackling of ice. At the same time, the cycle carries a deeper metaphorical meaning — the cyclical nature of the seasons mirrors the stages of human life. This is what makes Vivaldi’s concertos timeless and universally relevant. Perhaps that is why, for centuries, they have remained among the most celebrated works of classical music.
