Portraits: Serhii Bortkevych
TicketsConcert Program: Serhii Bortkevych — Four Pieces for Violin and Piano, Op. 63 Serhii Bortkevych — Selected Songs for Voice and Piano Serhii Bortkevych — Sonata for Violin and Piano, Op. 26 Performers: - Olesia Liuba /soprano/ Kyiv Chamber Ensemble: - Mykhailo Bilych /violin/ - Andrii Vasin /piano/ In its series of monographic programs “Portraits,” the Kyiv Chamber Ensemble this time turns its attention to the figure of Serhii Bortkevych — a native of Kharkiv whose fate, shaped by the trials of emigration, formed an artist of truly European stature. Bortkevych is one of the most poetic voices of the early 20th century; his music combines Romantic expressiveness with refined lyricism. He spent most of his life away from his homeland — in Constantinople, Sofia, and Vienna — yet in his music he repeatedly returned to Ukraine, in particular to memories of Kharkiv and Crimea. Although the composer is best known for his piano works, this evening the musicians of the Kyiv Chamber Ensemble will reveal the chamber, instrumental, and vocal facets of his legacy. This is the music in which we hear Bortkevych the Romantic, the dreamer, and the exile, who even far from home did not lose his faith in beauty.
