Enchanted Island, Sweet Nymphs and Shepherds
TicketsDid you think only Italians know how to savor the sweet torments of love (si dolce il tormento)? Not at all! English composers of the Renaissance and Baroque were no less inclined to sigh over “wondrous love that wounds.” Their madrigals and songs are just as tender, melancholic, passionate, and at times even slightly naïve, while their instrumental works captivate with the elegance and grace of dance forms. Thus, the title of the program immediately sets the scene (no surprise that for English music it is an island, right?) and introduces the main characters—surrounded, of course, by a sea of love. Everything we cherish in early music. In this program, you will hear works of various genres: songs by John Dowland, duets by Thomas Morley, suites by Nicola Matteis and Matthew Locke, as well as time-honored works by Henry Purcell—ranging from harpsichord suites to operatic arias and ceremonial odes. We invite you to immerse yourself in this unpredictable world of English music, which has been enchanting audiences with its unique character for centuries.
