Handel’s Affections
TicketsGeorge Frideric Handel wrote music that is impossible to remain indifferent to. Handel masterfully employed the Baroque theory of affections: he knew exactly which keys could unlock emotional responses in his listeners—and he used them with evident delight. In this program, we will hear Handel’s music as if it were a sculpture, viewed from different angles: opera excerpts (of course, indispensable), sonatas and cantatas, as well as sacred music—elevated and contemplative at once. And as you may remember, the LC: Early Music Ensemble performs Handel’s works on instruments of his time. So prepare to hear this music as the composer himself might have heard it.
