Concert Program: Borys Liatoshynskyi — Suite for Woodwind Quartet Carl Nielsen — Wind Quintet, Op. 43 Ihor Shamo — Ukrainian Quartet Performers: Chamber Winds Kyiv: Ihor Chura /flute/ Yurii Litun /oboe/ Yurii Nemyrovskyi /clarinet/ Serhii Mykhailov /bassoon/ Ruslan Pashkov /French horn/ June 28 — Constitution Day of Ukraine — will mark the beginning of a new ensemble: Chamber Winds Kyiv. The program brings together three works for wind ensemble composed during the flourishing of European modernist movements in the first half of the twentieth century. Liatoshynskyi’s Suite was written during the years of the Second World War. Nielsen’s Quintet emerged from an untimely phone call to a friend. And Ukrainian Quartet by Ihor Shamo, the composer of Kyiv’s anthem, unfolds like a kaleidoscope of Ukrainian melodic traditions. It will be a dialogue of contrasting timbres woven together within the remarkable acoustics of St. Andrew’s Church.
