The vocal duets by Mendelssohn, Massenet, and Lysenko set the tone for the entire evening. Richard Strauss is represented by songs from Op. 27 — the cycle he presented to his wife, a soprano singer, as a wedding gift. He composed "Cäcilie" on the eve of their wedding, and the entire cycle is imbued with that unique intonation of happiness that has not yet had time to become routine. Mahler, Debussy, Ravel, Bartók, and Stankovych each add a new shade to the program, while the overall atmosphere of the evening promises the mood of a watercolor painting — predominantly lyrical, yet at times playful in its intricate patterns.
