One could even assume that, in the public imagination, they are virtually synonymous. What could be more romantic than a walk through Montmartre or gazing at the Seine from the Mirabeau Bridge? French love is sensual and romantic, yet also passionate and fiery — and at times simply youthful, sincere, and joyful. The music of this program offers a French perspective on Spanish and Sicilian dances, Eastern spiritual practices, and masquerade spectacles. These works are filled with tenderness and familial warmth, like a family dinner in a Lumière brothers film; with childlike innocence, like Albert Lamorisse’s The Red Balloon; and, ultimately, with enchanted contemplation, like the paintings of the Impressionists.
